چکیده

U.S. Government work not protected by U.S. copyright Abstract A microwave power standard directly traceable to a fundamental atomic process could potentially reduce the uncertainties associated with microwave power measurement. We report on a proof-of-principle experiment to measure microwave power by observing Rabi oscillations in the clock transition of Cs atoms. The measurements were performed using a miniature atomic fountain.

Quantum-based microwave power measurements: Proof-of-concept experiment

We present an initial proof-of-concept experiment to measure microwave power based on quantum-mechanical principles. Ground-state cesium atoms exposed to microwaves at 9.192 631 770 GHz oscillate between two hyperfine states at a rate that is proportional to the rf magnetic field strength. This provides a quantum-based method of measuring rf field strength that depends only on the fundamental p...

Development of Cs Atomic Fountain Frequency Standard at CRL

Communications Research Laboratory (CRL) has been conducting the development of a Cesium atomic fountain primary frequency standard. Cs atoms are collected in a MOT and in optical molasses. They are further cooled to 2μK by PGC, and launched to a height of 30cm above the microwave cavity by moving molasses method. The launched atoms interact with the microwave twice, going upward and downward, ...

Frequency Biases Associated with Distributed Cavity Phase and Microwave Leakage in the Atomic Fountain Primary Frequency Standards Ien-csf1 and Nist-f1

We show that the frequency bias caused by distributed cavity phase has a strong dependence on microwave power. We also show that frequency biases associated with microwave leakage have distinct signatures in their dependence on microwave power and the physical location of the leakage interaction with the atom.

Reaching the quantum limit in a fountain clock using a microwave oscillator phase locked to an ultrastable laser

A cesium fountain clock is operated utilizing a microwave oscillator that derives its frequency stability from a stable laser by means of a fiber-laser femtosecond frequency comb. This oscillator is based on the technology developed for optical clocks and replaces the quartz-based microwave oscillator commonly used in fountain clocks. As a result, a significant decrease in the frequency instabi...

Measurement of dynamic end-to-end cavity phase shifts in cesium-fountain frequency standards.

We have measured a previously unobserved systematic frequency shift in our cesium-fountain frequency standard, NIST-F1. This shift, predicted theoretically previously, mimics the well-known end-to-end phase shift in atomic beam standards when synchronous thermal transients are present. Detuning the microwave cavity several megahertz from resonance reduces this effect to the deltaf/f = 1o(-16) l...
